Riding Baja on a Dirt Bike, An Experience of a Lifetime

Riding Baja on a dirt bike can be the experience of a lifetime! Most Baja adventures start at the Tecate border, whether it’s a simple day ride or a full pull to Cabo San Lucas. Tecate is ideal because you can park your truck in the United States, cross the border, and quickly find dirt roads going most anywhere. One of our favorite rides from Tecate is the Baja Oasis trail. This route takes you into the pine forest mountains in Sierra Juarez, then down the legendary Rumerosa grade to the desert floor. Most of all, Tecate is Famous for the Compadre Trail, an old route that heads due south. This route will take you to Ojos Negros or Valle de Trinidad. From there, you can head to Mike’s Sky Ranch, the Pacific Ocean, or San Felipe.

The most important part of any good Baja Moto Ride is planning. It’s critical to plan fuel, food and lodging stops. We often see visitors biting off more than they can chew, so it’s essential to make a plan that appears simple on paper, because Baja has a way of throwing curveballs. Bring plenty of tools and extra parts just in case. We find it ideal to have each member of the group carry something different to spread the weight out. Know where the critical mechanic shops are and bring a chase driver if possible.

Stay At the Baja Oasis

When booking a stay at The Baja Oasis, their staff can help with your planning and logistics. They offer a GPS guide for the area, chase support, and a guide if desired. This is a great first stop and only a 130-mile ride from the Tecate border. They have a cook who serves food and drinks upon arrival. It’s comfortable, warm, and anything but your average hotel. You’ll sleep well and leave with a full belly. From there, you can head to San Felipe or Mike’s Sky Ranch. Both options are legendary Baja pit stops. The Sea of Cortez is deep blue with white sand beaches. San Felipe is famous for shrimp and fish tacos. Mike’s Sky Ranch is an old hunting lodge that’s been converted into an off-road pit stop. It’s rustic, but iconic with a steak dinner and a candlelight room after the generator turns off. These are both good stopping points before heading north or south.

The Honda 450x

The ultimate Baja bike is a Honda 450x; these bikes were designed specifically for Baja. Honda developed them to race down there, and they are still winning championships on those bikes. The Baja Oasis has an inventory of these bikes built with nothing but the best components, if the group prefers to fly into San Diego and jump on a Baja prepped bike. Good suspension, lighting, and a plush seat can make a ride much more comfortable.

If you decide to ride deeper into Baja, it will become desolate, raw, and unforgiving. The tradeoff is unmatched beauty, whether it’s on the ocean or in the mountains. One remarkable zone is Catavina, this desert wonderland has an incredible variety of plant life that you’ll only find in that region. It’s been said that Dr. Suess would go there for inspiration when writing his books. Today, it’s obvious that he loved the unique Boojum trees and drew a version of them in his books. These Boojum trees can only be found in this special climate and only grow an inch each year. They bloom after rain with a yellow or orange flower at the top of the tree. Catavina is also known for having the absolute best trails in Baja. There are singletrack trails that go for up to 100 miles! The season is October to March; otherwise, it’s just too hot. Have a good plan and definitely a good map if you decide to trek into this “never never land.”

The Bay of Angeles

Next down the peninsula, you’ll find The Bay of Angels. It will be easy to understand its name as you turn the corner and see this deep blue bay full of islands named after angels. This town is well known for fishing and its peaceful vibe. For most moto enthusiasts, it’s a pit stop and doesn’t provide much attraction other than the raw beauty. Head south out of town and jump on the Baja 1000 racecourse if you want to continue south to San Ignacio.

San Ignacio is close to the center of Baja and is a magical oasis town. You’ll pass the palm-lined oasis as you enter town and head towards the town square. Once you enter the town square, it’s as if you went back in time 100 years. The pace is painfully slow, and a giant Mission sits at the head of the town square. This mission was built in the late 1500s mostly from stone and mortar, and is the most breathtaking in all of Baja. Do yourself a favor and stop at the ice cream shop for a date shake, then head to the staircase of the mission for a peaceful view of the town square.

We could go on and on about these rustic villages along the Baja Peninsula, but at the end of the day, you’ll have to prep a bike and head south. You will absolutely find adventure and fall in love with each town you pass. The local people will feed you and make your heart warm with their humble way of living. Ultimately you’ll get the bug and won’t want to stay away too long.
